Best Whole-House Water Filters UK 2026

Compare point-of-entry systems across six brands, from compact chlorine filters to multi-stage whole-property systems and private-water setups.

Important: A whole-house filter is not automatically a water softener. Carbon, sediment and specialist media can reduce selected contaminants or manage scale, but true hardness removal generally requires a dedicated ion-exchange softener.

How we compare whole-house systems

AVERQUA compares treatment method, flow suitability, cartridge format, maintenance, installation requirements and current UK availability. We distinguish filtration from limescale management and from true water softening.

TreatmentSediment, carbon, specialist media or combined stages.
FlowPoint-of-entry systems must support household demand.
MaintenanceCartridge replacement, backwashing or media servicing.
FitSpace, plumbing size and professional installation needs.

Whole-house filter or water softener?

Chlorine, taste and sediment

Whole-house carbon and sediment systems are designed around filtration. They can improve water characteristics without removing calcium and magnesium hardness.

Limescale management

Polyphosphate and salt-free conditioning can help manage scale formation, but that is different from removing hardness minerals from the water.

True softening

If your goal is measurable hardness reduction, compare dedicated ion-exchange water softeners separately and size them around household use and local hardness.
