Best Water Softeners UK 2026

Compare six true ion-exchange water softeners across six brands, including compact electric and non-electric twin-tank systems for different household sizes.

Important: This guide covers salt-regenerated ion-exchange softeners that remove calcium and magnesium hardness. Salt-free scale conditioners are covered separately because they do not soften water in the same way.

How we compare water softeners

What to check before buying a softener

Water hardness

System capacity and salt use depend on your local hardness. Use your water supplier’s data or a hardness test before sizing the unit.

Flow and household size

A compact unit may fit the cupboard but still needs to support simultaneous showers, taps and appliances without excessive pressure drop.

Installation + drinking tap

Plan the incoming main, bypass, drain, overflow and power where required. Some households retain an unsoftened drinking-water tap depending on local guidance and preferences.
