Which type should you consider?
Lowest-cost upgrade
A direct-connect carbon-based system is usually the simplest route when you want everyday filtration without fitting a separate tap.
Hard water / limescale
Look for a product that specifically addresses hardness. A normal carbon or UF filter should not automatically be treated as a water softener.
Dissolved solids
If reducing dissolved solids is your main priority, compare reverse-osmosis systems rather than assuming an under-sink carbon or UF filter does the same job.
Frequently asked questions
Do all under-sink water filters reduce limescale?
No. Many carbon and ultrafiltration systems are not designed to soften water. Check for a specific hardness-reduction claim.
Is ultrafiltration the same as reverse osmosis?
No. They use different membrane processes. Reverse osmosis is generally the category to compare when dissolved-solids reduction is the goal.
How often should filters be replaced?
It varies by product, water quality and usage. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions for your exact cartridge.
Do I need a plumber?
Some direct-connect systems are designed for DIY fitting. Dedicated-tap or more complex systems may be better installed by a competent installer.
